-Have you ever visited a concentration camp before?
No.
-What are your feelings right now about going to Buchenwald? Why?
I am not sure what to expect. I have read so much literature on
concentration camps, the Holocaust, and Germans' reactions to both of these
subjects, that I feel a little overwhelmed. Will the feelings I experience
there be almost a learned response, due to everything I've read about? I
wonder if I, like many Germans have done, will feel sad and depressed
while I am there, and than forget, moving on to the next site on the
itinerary.
-What purpose(s) do you think a concentration camp visit serve(s)?
Well, I would assume the purpose would be to make you internalize what
"really happened" during the Holocaust and gain an understanding of what
went on there. I'm a bit pessimistic, however, if one visit to a
concentration camp in 1998 will give us a complete understanding and
empathy with the victims that lived and died there in the 30's and 40's. >>
