I also respect Herr Klabes [head of Vassar Summer Program in Münster] a lot for always taking people to one--maybe it's because he's been in the States so long--and I really like how he doesn't let anyone talk for a couple of hours afterwards. I think that's very important because people are either going to operate on their gut reactions and get into a fight, or they're going to errupt into nervous laughter and not feel anything.

-How do you think the whole group dynamic affects a person's reaction?

Immensely...and that's why we shouldn't talk for two hours afterwards. I think we should not experience Buchenwald as a group, but rather as a group of individuals with one thing in common, that being our course. And we can give each other support when we're upset about it. Like I got a lot of pats on the back; I think everyone did when we were at Buchenwald last time. But I don't think it's the kind of thing that you can--I think everyone's reaction should be different and individual. Going there in a group is always problematic because of that. Taking a tour is also problematic. I just don't think it's the kind of thing where you can be like, "To your left we have the crematorium."
