- At this point, what do you feel the purpose(s) of concentration camp visits are?

I think it's important for individuals to visit these camps to realize the gravity of the situation. I think movies and novels can only evoke so much feeling. A tale told through the voice of another individual is not as thought-provoking as actually visiting the sites of persecution. I feel it is important to develop your own thoughts about the situation--based on historical fact, of course. It's important to have your own reaction rather than a reaction to someone else's reaction.

-How do you feel our visit to Buchenwald compared to our visits of Holocaust memorials in Berlin? What are the differences between a camp and memorials?

Personally, I feel that the one visit to Buchenwald did so much more for me than all the Holocaust memorials we've visited in Berlin. The memorials didn't particularly affect me that much. The memorials at Schöneberg were the most compelling to me, but the other memorials only affected me somehow because I knew that I should somehow be affected by this statue or plaque. Camps are important because they are preserving a part of history and preserving a memory. Memorials seem to be forcing emotion. >>
