About the Author:

My name is Holly Schneider. I am just about to graduate from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, USA, where I majored in English and German Studies. My main field of academic interest is Holocaust Studies. In the fall of 1997 I wrote a senior thesis entitled "Zeitgeist, Zukunftsgeist: MAUS and the Holocaust Literary Tradition." I have currently applied for a grant to study the reception of MAUS, Art Spiegelman's comic books about the Holocaust, in Germany.

I have visited Germany three times: in 1995 with the Vassar Summer Program in Münster, for the spring/summer semester of 1997 with the Berlin Consortium for German Studies, and then with the Vassar International Studies Study Trip to Berlin this past spring of 1998. On all three occasions, I visited Buchenwald, and in 1997, I traveled to Auschwitz, as well.

You may read some of my journal entries about my visits to Buchenwald.

Gratitudes:

Thank you very much to all ten of my participants, without whom this project would have been nothing. A special thanks, as well, to my fellow classmates and Susan Kassouf for their critique and support.
