-Have you ever visited a concentration camp before?
I have never visited a concentration camp before.
-What are your feelings right now about going to Buchenwald? Why?
Personally, I don't have any strong feelings for or against going to
visit Buchenwald. I guess I'm indifferent because I have never
experienced anything similar to it (the Holocaust Museum doesn't really
count). Maybe once there I'll change my mind, but I view the camps right
now as just another educational attraction which will give me a sense of
what happened during a turbulent and atrocious period in Germany history.
-What purpose(s) do you think a concentration camp visit serve(s)?
Visiting concentration camps will bring people closer to the
realizations of the Holocaust. Viewing or listening about this time from
class or movies or museum exhibits is one thing. Coming face to face with
the actual place where millions of people lost their lives is a
completely different story. Walking where people once walked before being
tortured, shot or gassed to death has a profound impact, especially on
people who either had ancestors or in some way feel responsible for what
took place.
