-What was your reaction to our visit to Buchenwald?
I was quite surprised how strongly the visit to Buchenwald affected
me. As I had mentioned before, I had been drowned in a barage of Holocaust
information and literature in many classroom settings in the past;
nevertheless, I found myself unprepared to cope with the emotions that
Buchenwald made me feel. Walking through the camp, actually seeing the
buildings and grounds in person--this experience affected me much more than
any previous encounter with the Holocaust in an academic setting.
How were expectations of the visit met or not met?
For me at least, the expectations of the visit were surpassed. I
had not anticpated feeling such emotion during the visit. The visit left
me with an unsettling feeling that I found difficult to shake off even
after we left the camp.>>
