I guess I expected to gain a lot of factual and
valuable information regarding the activities of the Third Reich, the SS and
the camps themselves, and this information I was able to get. So, I suppose that in that sense the camp did meet what little expectation I had before going. As
far as the physical aspect of the camp, my expectations were met. I'm
starting to believe that most camps just shared similar design qualities. The
camps were probably built much the same with new adjustments with the increase
of technology and practical experience.
-What is the purpose of concentration camp visits?
Well, I have to say that ostensibly, concentration camps seem to have as a
main goal the education of its visitors regarding the activities that took
place in the camps. I think people go to concentration camps to see the place
where these terrible crimes they hear about actually happened and to become
educated. Going to the actual sites helps one to develop a more visual and
more objective perspective on the issues and histories surrounding them.
-How do you feel our visit to Buchenwald compared to our visits of Holocaust memorials in Berlin? What are the differences between a camp and memorials?
Once again, the answer involves the educational aspect of the concentration
camp visits.
