1928

Gropius resigns as director
Hannes Meyer takes over as Bauhaus' new director


1929

Wall Street crashes in October 1929 causing Germany and the rest of the world to fall in an economic depression.


1930

Mies van der Rohe was appointed director of the Bauhaus. Mies focused on freeing Bauhaus of political activity in order to restore its reputation. By this time most of the individuals involved in the original Bauhaus had left; only Klee and Kandinsky remained.

1932

Bauhaus relocates to Berlin. Critics claim that Bauhaus was anti-German, Communist and Bolshevik. In addition, the Bauhaus faced opposition because a majority of the staff and the students were Jewish. On September 30, the Bauhaus school was vandalized and closed. However, Mies was relentless and rented a deserted telephone factory in Berlin and turned it into a school.


1933

On April 11, the Nazi government closes Bauhaus.

1937


Many of the students and professors from the Bauhaus fled to America. Gropius became the head of the school of architecture at Harvard University.
