Britz Horseshoe Estate

As part of our Berlin experience, we were to show an area or landmark of Berlin, which is representative of our project topics. We showed Britz Horseshoe Estate, located in the district of Berlin called Neuköln. The design of the site is by Bruno Taut and we recognized many Bauhaus elements. These we shared woth our peers, a group of about 20, all from Vassar College. Before showing our peers one of the objects of our studies of Bauhaus, we had interviewed actual residents of Britz to gain insight into their perceptions
of the dwellings. We had learned befoe our departure for Berlin
of how the Britz Estate was part of a radical architectural movement
of the 1920s and 30s. The "before" photo shows a massive structure.
The interior of the horseshoe appears desolate enough so as to
resemble a sports stadium and not a residential dwelling. We
knew we were looking for a circular structure, that meant no
strong angles in the exterior. Also, in the "before" picture,
the structure seems to stand out from its surroundings. The photo
marked as "before" was the image we had in mind as we
searched for the real site of 1998. |
