gropius

walter gropius (1883-1969)

Founder and original director of Bauhaus. Born in Berlin on May 18, 1883. By the age of 26 Gropius was asked to build the Fagus Factory in Germany and by the age of 36 had founded the Bauhaus school in Weimar.

Three main aims of Walter Gropius' mission statement for Bauhaus:
1) rescue all the arts from the isolation in which each then found itself and to train the crafstmen, painters and sculptors of the future to embark on cooperative projectives in which all their skills would be combined.
2) elevate the status of the crafts to that which the 'fine arts' then enjoyed.
3) establish 'constant contact with the leaders of the crafts and industries of the country'
