Rather than a research paper, which seems more suited for relaying linear and very text-based arguments, your project of a web site will allow you incorporate all the experiences of the semester: experiences filled with sights, sounds, thoughts and motion. The web site will also ask you to think not only about the ways in which Berlin is represented, but the ways in which you choose to represent it. Using the concept of the "sign-chain" as a template should allow our very diverse group of students from different disciplinary backgrounds to develop their own approach to explore and even create competing visions of the city.

Together, we will embark on an adventure both in the city and in cyberspace. Even if you have no more experience on the web than email, the semester project will gradually introduce you to the aesthetic, intellectual and ethical possibilities of this new medium. We will start slowly, beginning by surfing the web; we will then meet with relevant web experts, such as Professor Michael Joyce; and with the aid of student interns Holly Schneider and Roland Gauthier, you will come to create your own site. Help will always be available. What follows are guidelines for the project: you are encouraged to let your enthusiasm for the city take you beyond these guidelines and run with the project.

explore!

experiment!
