Program Description:

This workshop will provide for 2 tracks of exploration, with joint introductory and closing sessions. The opening session will highlight a successful 3D digital collection, and the concluding session will illuminate the pedagogical potential of collection databases.

Track 1, for technologists and media technicians, will be focused on the technical and practical issues of the digitizing itself. Led by an experienced photographer, participants will have hands on experience in planning and implementing a photo shoot, including set-up, lighting, and record keeping. This will include actually photographing a sample object. Participants will then use these images to learn post-production software techniques by creating a Quicktime VR of the earlier photographed object.

Track 2, for librarians and content specialists, will be focused on questions and issues related to the planning and development of the metadata scheme for a 3D collection. It will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of data management, while also including small group activities to allow participants to develop and explore their particular collection's metadata strategy. In addition, time will be spent in a discussion and overview of current software tools available to manage and access virtual collections.

What the workshop will address:

The goal of the workshop is to provide those who are developing their own teaching collections an opportunity to learn from their peers. Together, we will address issues and concerns related not only to the technical creation of the digital objects, but also the creation, use and maintenance of the collection resource itself.

The workshop will address these questions and more:
