:: Art from the Julia Dunwell Estate ::
Julia Dunwell (1918 - 2006) was a lifelong supporter of arts in Haiti. She graced the Vassar Haiti Project art sales with her presence each year.
Mrs. Dunwell had a steadfast commitment to the Poughkeepsie community, and is credited with spearheading the effort to save the Bardavon Opera House Theatre in the city of Poughkeepsie. She had an indomitable affection for Haiti, where her son Roger runs the Villa Creole Hotel in Petion-ville. She would often give us advice as we started the Vassar Haiti Project. "Write a letter to Mr. [Bill] Gates," she exclaimed, "and let him know what you are doing!"
We are indebted to Julia Dunwell for her staunch support of our project, and we are privileged to offer a few pieces from her estate on this website.
