Reforestation Initiative

The main goal of the Reforestation Committee is to help raise money to plant fruit trees in the village, with the long-term goal to ensure the sustainability of Chermaitre.

What I like about the reforestation committee is that it was created as the result of a discussion with the leaders of Chermaitre, during our visit in the Spring Break of 2008. Ours is a very dynamic and devoted group, constantly coming up with ideas to raise the necessary funds.

During the Fall Semester of 2008, we organized an Open Mic Night alongside the Relief Committee, but also tried to create outside partnerships with different organizations. This Spring Semester, we have already taken part in the national teach-in day in environmental sustainability, in order to raise awareness about the VHP and about the environmental situation in Haiti. I hope that the level of excitement and involvement of the members of the Reforestation Committee continues to increase and that in 5 years time, AT MOST, the hills surrounding Chermaitre will be green!
