STANFORD
UNIVERSITY
Department of Materials Science & Engineering
The
Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University
invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant
Professor level in the areas of information storage, electronic,
or photonic materials. Applicants should hold an earned doctorate
in Materials Science and Engineering or in a related field, and
should have outstanding potential for establishing an independent
research program and for teaching materials science at the graduate
and undergraduate levels. The applicant should also have the ability
to work in an interdisciplinary environment, as participation in
interdepartmental programs and interaction with students and faculty
in other disciplines will be expected. The department is interested
in applicants with research focused on materials and device structures
for informatin storage, and that can participate in our Center for
Research on Information Storage Materials (CRISM) and/or interact
with the electronic and photonic materials efforts at Stanford.
Other individuals with exceptional promise in materials science
and engineering who have outstanding records of accomplishment in
closely related areas of research and teaching will also be considered.
The
department also seeks an individual who is committed to excellence
in teaching and to the mentoring of students. The successful candidate
will be expected to contribute to the teaching program of the department
by offering core courses in areas such as structures, thermodynamics,
and electrical, optical and magnetic properties of materials, as
well as by developing new curricula on informatin storage, electronic
or photonic materials.
Applications
should include a summary of educational and professional backgrounds,
a current list of published work, evidence of teaching experience
and the names of at least three referees who may be consulted by
the search committee regarding the candidate's work. An indication
of how the candidate's experience matches the position described
above should also be given. Applicants are encouraged to write brief
descriptions of their plans for future research and how those plans
might be realized in a Stanford setting, as well as to submit similar
statements on teaching, focusing especially on their vision of teaching
in materials science and engineering. The appointment is expected
to be made during the 2000 calendar year; applications should be
submitted by 15 August 2000 to:
