Description
of Research |
Dr. Edmonson's current research activities are in the areas of adaptive filtering, evolutionary computation, and global optimization. In adaptive filtering, his research consists of the development and analysis of daptive algorithms that model IIR filter structures, both state space and pole-zero formulation. A logical extension of studying adaptive systems is evolutionary computation, which is an optimization procedure that is modeled after biological optimization process evolution. These algorithms consist of genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, and evolutionary programming. In signal processing, there exist many instances where the objective function to be minimized is not convex (e.g. adaptive IIR filtering), whereby optimization to the global optimum cannot be guaranteed. Dr. Edmonson is investigating the application of global optimization algorithms, i.e. interval analysis, branch and bound, and clustering, to solve estimation problems with a nonconvex objective function. |
