Description of Research
Dr. Pines' research interests include smart materials/structures, rigid body dynamics, structural dynamics, astrodynamics, control systems theory, spacecraft mechanical design and hypersonics. He was formerly a member of the Advanced Technology Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory--LLNL. This program housed the foundation of the former SDIO program "Brilliant Pebbles" whose enhanced sensor technology was used on the highly successful Clementine-1 spacecraft encounter with the asteroid 1620-Geographics. In addition, Dr. Pines developed detailed 6-DOF models of the Clementine-1 and Miniature Sensor Technology Integration-MSTI-3 satellite dynamics for mission planning studies. His project experience includes the design/development of an advanced lightweight gimbals for the MSTI-3 program. This gimbals is presently slated to be integrated on one of LLNL's Unmanned Aerial Vehicles titled "RAPTOR-Demonstrator."
