Description
of Research |
Concerns about environmentally safe disposal of solid waste have heightened community awareness and sparked increasing interest in the opportunities for recycling of solid wastes. Plastic end products and materials eventually contribute to the solid waste stream. Most post-consumer plastic waste is landfilled along with municipal solid waste (MSW), and plastic waste accounts for a large and growing portion of the MSW stream. The available capacity for landfilling is declining, and some studies indicate that plastic wastes are very slow to degrade in landfills. Some reports also postulate that plastic waste contribute to potentially hazardous emissions from MSW to the environment. Recycling thus becomes a very attractive option for reducing the impacts of post-consumer plastic wastes. Dr. Udoka's research seeks to explore a possible scheme for encodation of plastic products, by primary resin types. The approach will apply Radio Frequency Identification (RF/ID) technology to make plastic end products adaptable to automated scanning and sorting and subsequent diversion to separate shredding and storage lines by resin types for recycling. This would significantly facilitate the recycling and reclamation of plastic waste, minimizing pollution. |
