of Research |
Dr. Alcala's primary research interest is the development of optical methods to implement biomedical sensors employing time resolved spectroscopy. The excited state lifetime of various luminescent compounds is sensitive to parameters of physiological interest like pH, carbon dioxide, oxygen, electrical activity, etc. Optical fibers and CCD image sensor arrays can be used to capture physiological information provided by luminescent substances. Another of his interests is the study of the dynamics of the protein molecule employing time resolved fluorescence. Natural protein residues behave like luminescent sensors. Their lifetime is sensitive to the protein molecule dynamics. A third research interest is the study of the propagation of near infrared (NIR) photons through tissue. This provides information of blood and tissue oxygen contents noninvasively. The measurement of NIR times of flight in tissue are analogous to fluorescence lifetimes measurements. The aim of this research is to develop the use of infrared light of image tissue oxygen with applications to mammography. |
