Description of Research |
One of Dr. Jones' ongoing projects is the development of improved capability for the US Navy for predicting the dynamic structural behavior of main propulsion shafting in ships. Specifically, formulation has been developed for lateral vibration phenomena, and implemented in a computer program. Two significant phenomena are handled: an instability occurrence known as whirling, and the cyclic stresses caused by gravity. This project is part of a larger Navy effort for upgrading the design tools for all types of shafting, and is being upgrading the design tools for all types of shafting, and is being done jointly by teams at Howard and Carnegie-Mellon Universities. |
