Description of Research
My area of research is in the cell biology of cell shape changes and cell motility. My research is focused on molecular motors and the regulation of such processes as cell division and cell polarity. Recently, we have studied the roles of how the regulation of actin- and microtubule-based motors are regulated during cytokinesis and in Golgi membrane trafficking.

In addition, I have been actively involved in undergraduate and pre-college science education and have served as Program Director for a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program grant. I have been a member of three NIH study sections, including serving as chair of one. I have been involved in efforts to address the underrepresentation of minorities in graduate science education. I have served on numerous NIH panels and study sections whose goal is to increase the numbers of minority scientists, have written invited articles on these issues, have served on the Minority Affairs Committee of the American Society for Cell Biology and have presented a number of keynote addresses to scientific societies and others in this area. I am presently a member of the Advisory Committee to the Office of Research on Minority Health at the NIH and am the President-Elect of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native American in Science.
