What Should You Expect?

Pariser Platz as viewed from an Executive Suite at the Hotel Adlon.

Pariser Platz fails the Berlin and world community. When the construction of everything is completed, we envision the area taking on a completely different role than it does today. The square will serve as a place for political big-whigs, diplomats, and world business leaders. It is not a place for the average person. There are not small cafes lining the street. A few post card and book stores are located a bit further down Unter den Linden. Eventually, all that will be left are the tour buses, taxis waiting outside the Hotel, and the mafia-run merchants pawning off goods on tourists. In no way do we conclude that Pariser Platz will be an unattractive place, just frustrating. In support of our thesis we are looking at the two completed structures on the square: the Hotel Adlon and the Dresdner Bank headquarters. Our argument is constructed around the stated purposes of these two buildings, their architecture, function, reason for choosing such a prime location, and our experiences inside the buildings (yes, we were permitted to enter).
