Holocaust
memorials in Berlin on the other hand, are for the most part positioned in
an unassuming location, they are so much a part of the life of the city,
that they don't impress upon a visitor the same intensity of feeling.
- Did you sense the tension you were worrying about at the camp--that the
camp is almost like another tourist site?
No, I was interested to find that the camp did not strike me as much like a
tourist site as I had expected. I think this was partly due to the
depressing weather we experienced while we were there, which certainly
contributed to a more somber experince.
It did bother me a little that
there was a snack bar and cafeteria at the site. It did not seem entirely
appropriate; however, I understand the need for necessities such as food,
even at such a place as a concentration camp.
I would be interested to see
how touristy the camp seems in the middle of summer--on a nice day.
Perhaps this makes guests to the camp feel even more uneasy? To see
beautiful surroundings around them and be told the horrible experiences of
the inmates of the camp. I don't know if you think weather plays a
significant role in how people react to experiences such as this, but I
would say it is an important consideration when answering this question.
