The simple memorials do not talk to us in the same manner as the
camps do. Also the memorials set us apart from the actual sites of terror and
help us to clean up the act in a peculiar way. At the memorials we are not
forced to deal with as much "memory" or guilt and responsibility as we do at
the concentration camps. Going to the Neue Wache, for instance, was completely
different from going to Buchenwald. At die Neue Wache I felt almost nothing
in comparison to the grief and discomfort I felt at Buchenwald.
